Frequently asked questions about the product: Crimp

Q: Hi, I'm quite new to beading and I don't know how to use crimp beads, so can you please give me some information about them? Thanks
A: Crimp beads are really useful if you're using beading wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/beading-wire/c434 Just slip your crimp onto the wire and thread it back through the crimp to create a loop, then squash your crimp down with pliers and you have a loop that you can attach to a clasp. You can also thread and squash a crimp on either side of a bead to make it hang unsupported on the wire, this is the way to create a floating necklace. For a really professional look use crimping pliers to fold the crimp over on itself neatly, have a look at our blog to see how to use them www.beadbarmy.com/2011/01/bead-barmy-surgery-is-open-top-tips-and-faqs/

Q: How to secure clasp onto thread so that is tight and wont come loose
A: First thread your crimp onto a length of wire, then your clasp, then loop the end of the wire back through your crimp and squash it tight with a pair of pliers. Your clasp should be securely fixed within the loop. You can make a simple loop on the other side to hook it onto, or try adding in a jump ring or split ring for a more professional finish. Take a look at our project page for some ideas and step-by-step instructions www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/projects.php

Q: I have 1mm cord, what size crimps do I need?
A: I would recommend our tiny round crimps www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-tiny/bo4051or doubling up the cord and using a flat crimp www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-flat/bo4037.

Q: I have got some crimp beads from yourself. On the back of the pack it says M-CR. SP midi pack crimp SP (140 pieces) this is the size I want to get more of, I think they are 1mm, but it does not say - can you let me know. Also do you sell this size if they are 1mm as I cannot see them, I would like a few colours. Thanks
A: That is one of our packs that we sell through shops like HobbyCraft and other craft and beading shops. The crimps in the midi crimp pack are exactly the same as our usual stock www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp/bo4025 They're 2mm and we have 4 different finishes in the same crimps (we're hoping to add antique copper soon too).

Q: I have had my first crimp beads and can only make them flat!!! humph!!! I recognise there must be a crimping plier or something to make them round when squashed - what is it please? Can you supply a link to your most economical ones or point me in the right direction please?
A: You can use crimping pliers like these www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimping-pliers/bo1031 to fold your crimp beads over on themselves and make a much neater finish. There's a two part process to it, first you squash it into a sort of half-moon, then you squash this over on itself. See our Bead Doctor's top tip on how to use crimping pliers at: www.beadbarmy.com/2011/01/bead-barmy-surgery-is-open-top-tips-and-faqs/

Q: I have just started to make stretch bracelets but cannot hide the knot and it looks untidy is there anything I can put over the knot to cover it or do you have any ideas.
A: Crimp covers, that are mostly used to hide a crimp, can also be good for covering knots - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=crimp+cover. Another idea would be to glue a bead over the knot to disguise it, as long as the hole on the bead is not too large.

Q: I want to create a floating necklace, using quite small beads. What size crimps would be suitable and should I use tubes or round crimp beads?
A: I would recommend our round crimp beads www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp/bo4025. You can either squash these flat with flat nosed pliers or for a more secure finish I recommend using crimping pliers www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimping-pliers/bo1031. To give a neater finish you could also use crimp covers www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp-cover-3mm/bo4042.

Q: I want to make a bead curtain with fishing line, and gaps between the beads, could I use crimps? The beads have 1.5 mm holes.
A: You could use crimp on the nylon fishing line but as the hole size is larger than the crimp bead when squashed I would recommend adding a crimp cover which will act as a stopper as well as giving a neat finish www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp-cover-3mm/bo4042.

Q: What is this product used for? I am looking for something to fasten the end of a wire loop over a clasp. Is that what this product is for?
A: Yes you can loop wire over and use a crimp to secure it, just slide the crimp onto the wire and use crimping pliers to squash it into shape.
