Frequently asked questions about the product: Crimping pliers
Q: Are these crimping pliers suitable for all sizes of crimps? The ones I have will only round off larger crimps.
A: These crimping pliers are perfect for the 2mm crimps that we sell, I'm not sure they'd work too well against much larger crimps.
Q: Are these pliers suitable for the 5mm ribbon crimps that you sell? And how is it best to use them?
A: No these pliers are specifically designed for the tiny crimp beads that you squash onto beading wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp/bo4025 you use them to fold the crimp over on itself, creating a much neater look. For the ribbon crimps a pair of ordinary flat nosed, or round nosed pliers will be fine, you just squash on flap down then the next over that to enfold the ribbon.
Q: Can I use these crimping pliers for (leather crimps). They are made of metal and look like a spring about 4mm.
A: No, these pliers are specifically for the tiny crimps that you can find at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp/bo789 The best pliers to use with the round leather crimps would be some half round nosed ones like: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Craft-pliers/bo1055 You'll need to just squash the last rung of the crimp really tight so it grips around your thread.
Q: I always have problems using the crimping pliers. They only seem to work properly if I am using sterling silver crimps. With SP crimps they always seem to slip after they have been squeezed! What am I doing wrong?
A: It can be tricky to get a good bond. When you make the first squash it's best to have your wire on either sides of the half moon shape that the crimping pliers make, so effectively they have their own compartments of crimp. Then when you make your second squash the two sides of the half moon get crushed together and it creates a more secure bond. It's really hard to explain in words. Sometimes I add two crimps next to each other to be really secure. If you find this still isn't working then it might be best to go to the extreme step of a dab of superglue on the spot where you put the crimp, then try crimping and you should have the extra strength of the glue to prevent the crimp slipping (but you'll also end up with glue on your fingers and pliers!).
Q: Nearly every time I use these crimping pliers the crimp breaks I use round crimps and tube crimps it still makes no difference. I am using 2mm crimps so don't know what I am doing wrong?
A: That really shouldn't be happening at all. You can find tips about using crimping pliers on our blog at: www.beadbarmy.com/2011/01/bead-barmy-surgery-is-open-top-tips-and-faqs/ but if this doesn't help then please e-mail me at: mailbox@beadsunlimited as we may need to take a look at and exchange your pliers.
