Frequently asked questions about the collection: Elastic & Elasticity
Q: can this be used for pandora style bracelets
A: Sure, pandora bracelets are usually quite bulky though, so you could use a couple of strands, you could even plait the elastic.
Q: Do retailers use different names for elastic or elasticity, i.e. Stretch Majic and Stretch cord, are these the same thing? What thread do you use for making daisy bracelet?
A: Yes, Elasticity is our own brand name for stretchy clear thread which is the same sort of product as stretch magic. You could use a loom thread like www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Nymo-D/bo4205?sid=2965#item2965 to make a daisy bracelet like the one in this video www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/videos/simple-daisy-necklace/17
Q: Hello. Is there an elastic that will fit through holes of pearl pearls ? Thanks
A: It depends on the hole size of your pearls but the finest we have is 0.5mm, thin Elasticity www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Elasticity-thin-25m/bo4169
Q: Hi i already have some beads that i bought elsewhere the beads are 4mm but the hole sizes vary. I wanted to make some stretchy bracelets to sell using those beads and i wanted to purchase the string from here. What string do you recommend i buy. The beads in size are quite small and again the hole sizes vary.
A: If you are planning to make bracelets I would recommend using our thin elasticity www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Elastic-Elasticity/c433 which is elasticated and comes in a 0.5mm thickness so this should hopefully fit through your 4mm beads.
Q: Hi, I'm using glass beads on a 1mm elasticity cord but can't fnd crimps big enough to feed the cord through twice. Can you recommend any crimps?
A: We normally recommend simply knotting elasticity and sealing with a dab of glue as using crimps can damage and weaken the elasticity. We currently only sell one size of crimp which would be too small to fit a 1mm cord through twice but we do have a crimp tube that is 3mm wide so you should be able to fit your cord through twice and these simply close by squeezing flat so you could give this a try www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp-tube-multi-strand/bo6997
Q: Hi, I've purchased elastic elsewhere and its VERY stretchy, it seems a little too stretchy. I usually use wire but would like to use elastic on some projects, can you give me some advice please?
A: If the elastic you have seems too stretchy then it may be disconcerting but there shouldn't be a problem as long as it snaps back to it's original length and doesn't sag when you put beads on it. Elastic is great for simple bracelets and light necklaces, something that you just want to pull on and off. Check out the elasticity used in the bracelet in this project www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Designer-Challenge/bo7334?sid=8622#item8622 If in doubt always use the thick elasticity, it's 0.8mm thick so it's still thin enough to thread through most things but it's way stronger and longer lasting.
Q: I have bought some elasticity to repair my daughters bracelet, how do I tie it so that it does not slip undone
A: The trick with elasticity is to make a couple of tight knots and then seal them with a dab of clear nail varnish or superglue. This seal will stop the elasticity from slipping apart and gradually coming undone.
Q: I have made some bracelets with a similar product (1mm thick)and found that they can be stretched so much that they do not go back into shape. I have a shop bought stretchy bracelet that is not this stretchy. How does Elasticity perform? How can I overcome this problem of it becoming overstretched? If I tighten it a lot when I make the bracelet, it seems too thin and I am concerned it will snap. Should I try the thinner thread and use two strands?
A: We haven't had any specific complaints about the elasticity over-stretching but you could try using two strands of the thinner 0.5mm as this will give the bracelet extra strength. Our 0.8mm thickness is very strong by itself but it does depend on the weight of the beads. I would recommend perhaps trying a meter of each to see what you prefer.
Q: I have some 3mm and 4mm Swarovski Crystal beads that I'd like to make into a bracelet. What size elastic should I buy?
A: I'd definitely recommend our thin elasticity www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=eyn&x=0&y=0 it's only 0.5mm thick so it should fit through the 3mm and 4mm crystals you have. Despite being super thin it will be strong enough for a bracelet. Just make a couple of tight knots and seal them with a dab of superglue or clear nail varnish. Then you should have a simple bracelet that you can pull on and off easily, no fiddling about with clasps!
Q: IS elasticity easy to thread for children from about age 4 using you alphabet beads (is it rigid or limp?) and if so which thickness. Once tied will it stretch to go on and off?
A: It's like a stretchy nylon but a little softer, so fairly rigid and easy to thread as it won't fray. Either size will fit through our letter beads but the thicker Elasticity might prove easier to use and slightly stronger. Once tied in 2 or more tight knots (young children will need help with this) it will indeed stretch to go on and off easily.
Q: What is Elasticity made of? I am looking for something latex free.
A: It's latex free, it's a mixture of polyester and polyurethane.
Q: What is the best elastic for simple bracelets
A: For simple bracelets you can use our cotton covered elastic as this is secured with a simple knot or can use elasticity which we recommend knotting tightly then applying a dab of glue or clear nail varnish to secure.
Q: What would be the best product out of these to use when threading beads for a bag charm or key ring? :-)
A: It depends on the beads etc. being used really, Elasticity is finer than elastic (so better with small holes) but elastic is easier to tie securely.
Q: Will it work on the pandora beads?
A: You could use the thick elasticity but I would recommend using several strands as the holes are quite wide and combing them with a spacer with a smaller hole like these washers www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Washer/bo334, melons www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Melon/bo332 or www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Rose-9mm/bo328 so it holds it shape better.
Q: Would you say that elastic is ok to string crystals? or would they cut through the elastic?? Thanks
A: Crystals shouldn't cut through elastic, unless they have particularly rough edges around the hole. The type of elastic you want to use will depend on the size of the crystal, something like the 4mm Swarovski bicones have pretty small holes so you wouldn't be able to use the coloured cotton covered elastic, you'd have to use elasticity (thick EYK is fine!).
