Frequently asked questions about the product: Gympa 1mm

Q: Hi, I need to attach large crystals to leather and wonder whether this would be better than plastic coated steel? I need as narrow a product as possible and need to be able to stitch it like thread, for it to withstand flexing whilst being worn and also be durable enough to not shear off in the drilled holes in the crystal yet not chip or damage the glass! Not too much to ask then! Thanks.
A: Wow that's quite a few specifications. The gympa is thin (1mm) and flexible, I would definitely not recommend plastic coated wire for this as it's not flexible and sculptural enough. You would be able to stitch gympa like a plated wire; it's flexible but won't flow like thread so you may have difficulties sewing with it (on the plus side there's no need for needles!). The silky covering means it won't discolour or tarnish over time (unlike plated wire) but it is prone to fraying, so you'll need to seal the end with a dab of glue before you start sewing or you'll end up in a right mess. I wouldn't have any doubts about its strength or what it might do to the crystal, just the ease of working with it. At the end of the day it's something you may have to test on a small piece to find out if it's a good material to work with for this project.

Q: I have used DMA memory wire to make button jewellery. Initially it was very successful as the buttons were kept in place and didn't turn when being worn. However, I had a few complaints from customers who said that over time the the wire covering, especially on bracelets, started to fray leaving the wire exposed. Do you think I would have the same probelm with Gympa? Thank you.
A: DMC memory wire behaves like our gympa but nobody has let us know how gympa wears over time. I've tried to destroy it by scratching it with my fingernails and it does go fluffy, I'm not sure it would count as fraying but if you pick at it you can pull fibres away. Maybe the best thing to try would be a wire with a coloured coating that won't rub off or deteriorate, like our metal based coloured wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Coloured-wire/bo4202 it won't have the softness of a silk covering but it should be really long-lasting.

Q: Is this vegan friendly?
A: As far as we're aware the gympa is entirely made of metal wire and man-made fibres (no silk in the covering!), with no waxy coating or anything like that so I think it's a safe product for vegans.

Q: What projects would you use Gympa for? Is it hard enough to make a small beaded structure eg. Would it be suitable for attaching beads to a tiara in a 3 dimensional form?
A: Yes, gympa would be suitable for tiaras. It's not the stiffest wire so any shapes you make would need to be small and tightly formed to withstand any stresses (little knocks and bumps, hopefully you won't get too many of these on your head!). Our designer Gemma has just been experimenting with it for some projects, there's one with a gympa flower on a hairslide that should be out soon.
