Frequently asked questions about the collection: Instruction Leaflets
Q: How to make a shamballa bracelet?
A: We have a Shamballa bracelet tutorial available on our Bead Barmy blog made by our resident Bead Doctor: www.beadbarmy.com/2012/01/the-bead-doctor-tutorial-shamballa-bracelet/
Q: I'm looking for beads to put on the end of feathers for a dream catcher but not sure whether they are 'pony beads' or not. Hope you can help
A: Most of the dream catchers I've seen have pony (barrel shaped) or round beads attached to the feathers. It would really be a matter of personal taste as to which beads to use. Our plastic pony beads are at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Pony-Beads/c444 , we also have feathers at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Coloured-feathers/bo7376?sid=8606#item8606 , www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Feather/bo4394?sid=1508#item1508 and www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Antique-feather/bo7031?sid=8118#item8118 . We have some bone beads that might be good for a natural feel www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/bone-beads/c18 or there are wooden beads if you want bright colours www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/wood-beads-brightly-coloured/c406
Q: What size headpin do I use to make earrings?
A: Our normal headpins www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=headpin&x=0&y=0 will be ideal. If you need to add any extra length you can join another to it by twisting it into an eyepin.
Q: What size silk thread would you recommend for restringing a necklace of Keshi pearls approx 3x4mm? And what method? I was going to use doubled thread, french wire and knot between each pearl but this seems particularly fiddly and is it even possible to use doubled thread with the carded silk threads?
A: The first consideration is the bead's hole size, our silk threads come in the following thicknesses: SKN approx 0.5mm, SKM approx 0.7mm and SKK approx 0.9mm. The needle attached is actually a piece of twisted wire, this can be untwisted slightly to make room for doubled thread though it is a bit fiddly. Silk thread is of course the traditional choice for stringing pearls and even the thin (SKN) is extremely strong and will do the job. Knotting between each bead is indeed very fiddly but probably worth the effort for pearls! Try using a knotter tool www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Beadalon-knotter-tool/bo3807?sid=7228#item7228
Q: What thread/cord would you use to make a pearls (6mm) bracelet? Thanks
A: I'd probably use a stretchy thread for a bracelet to avoid fiddling around with clasps. For 6mm pearls our thin elasticity www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=eyn&x=0&y=0 would be ideal. Just a couple of tight knots and then a dab of superglue, or clear nail varnish, to seal the knot and you're away!
