Frequently asked questions about the product: Silver plated wire
Q: Do you know what 24 gauge (American sizing) is?
A: 24 gauge is around 0.5mm thick.
Q: Hello. I need 0.2mm silver plated and gold plated wire. Hobbycraft do it but it's really expensive. Will you be stocking it at all?
A: I'm afraid the only 0.2 plated wire we have is our lacemakers' wire, which can be found here - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Lacemakers-wire-0-2mm/bo5278 You may be able to find another supplier via our links page at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/links-related.php
Q: Hi, Are all your metal wire and findings lead and nickel free? Thanks!
A: All of our findings that are meant to be worn in contact with the skin conform to the EU nickel directives definition of low nickel. To be described as low nickel products intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin must release nickel at a rate of less than 0.5 micro grams to per square centimetre per week and post assemblies which are inserted into pierced ears and other pierced parts of the human body must release nickel at a rate of less than 0.2 micro grams to per square centimetre per week. You can find lots of useful information about Nickel (and other metals) at: www.thelaboratory.co.uk/nickel.html Nickel free is another definition, it doesn't mean an item is free of all traces of nickel it just classifies items that release nickel at a different rate. All our findings are also low lead.
Q: Hi, I would like some wire to weave with, can you recommend something that will make my finished cloth slightly bendable but also washable? Many thanks Nicky
A: I don't think that any of the wire we sell would be suitable for washing, even hand washing. You'd want a metal based wire for weaving if you want it to bend and hold its shape but then the problem would be rusting and tarnishing in contact with water.
Q: I have bought your wire in the past and been very happy with it but I would be interested to know if you do the other finishes, copper, brass etc in the larger gauges ie either 1.2mm or 1.5mm. I am needing the larger thickness for the work I am doing.
A: We only currently offer our other finishes of wire in 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1mm.
Q: I want to make flowers using wire and a jig to use as connecters on necklaces. What would be best please?
A: I would recommend either the 0.6 or 0.8 thickness of wire as this will still be quite pliable but should hold its shape nicely depending on how much weight it needs to hold.
Q: I would be very much interested in square and half-round wires silver plated and maybe copper. Has there been more interest and will you be stocking it?
A: I'm afraid we don't currently have nay plans to stock square or half-rounded wire but I will past your request onto our buying team.
Q: I'm a novice at jewellery making and wonder if this is the right stuff to make earring hoops (with beads on), or do you supply ready made hoops?
A: We have some ready made easy to use hoops at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Hanging-hoop-small-SP/bo5230
Q: In the market there are various types of wires. What is the difference between metallic wire and silver plated wire? I used both and the metallic wire is more soft and easy to use. But I am wondering which of the two it lasts longer over time without getting tarnished or rust. Thanks!
A: I'm not sure there's a lot of difference but I can tell you our silver plated wire is copper based. Any plated finish will unfortunately tarnish slightly over time but you can polish them to re-gain their finish and also by keeping them out of the elements!
Q: Is your spw non-tarnish?
A: Not specifically, though it's a very popular product and we haven't had complaints about tarnishing as far as I'm aware.
Q: Shall you be getting square wire as many designs need this. I see beadalon are producing it now.
A: I don't think we're planning on adding square wire to our range at the moment but I have seen it for sale on other sites. If we get lots of enquiries about it then we'll try it out so anyone else that's interested please let me know!
Q: which of the silver wires could i use for hanging small glass baubles on my xmas tree?
A: Try the 0.4mm, it's really easy to bend and twist with your fingers but strong enough to hold up heavy items.
Q: Which wire is best for hanging heavy pendants on which will keep shape but have a bit of flexibility?
A: The thicker the wire the better it will hold its shape. The 1.2mm and 1.5mm wire needs to be bent with pliers and should hold its shape come what may, it's quite sculptural. The thinner wires are best for wrapping and coiling as in this project www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Amber-Ramble/bo7327?sid=8615#item8615 . The problem with the silver plated wire is that because it is best used for a sculptural creation even the 0.8mm and the 1mm will kink and lose its shape over time. What I'd recommend for a heavy pendant would be beading wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Beading-Wire/c434 used with crimps www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Crimp/bo4025
Q: Which wire is best for on tiaras? Thanks.
A: If you use a really thick wire like 1.2mm, or 1mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silver-plated-wire/bo4196 then you'll need pliers and a bit of strength to bend the shape you want and since the wire is really rigid once shaped it should have enough tension to wear it as a tiara. Once you've used a thinner wire such as 0.6mm to wrap around decoratively it should be super strong!
