Frequently asked questions about the collection: Threads Misc
Q: Do you have thé macrame thread please ?
A: You can use most threads for macramé knotting it just depends on the final look you want to achieve. I would recommend our waxed cotton cord www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Waxed-cord/bo4159 as it is easy to work with and comes in lots of bright colours. We have used it to create our Shamballa style bracelets using macramé knotting www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Shamballa-Bracelet/bo7362. You could also try rat tail www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Rat-tail/bo4216 or even leather www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-thong/bo4157.
Q: Do you sell Monofilment threads please?
A: Yes we sell two thicknesses a 0.3mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Nylon-thin/bo4165 and a 0.5mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Nylon-thick/bo4166
Q: Hello,
Could you tell me if the linen thread is avaible in brown?
Thank you.
Carol
A: This thread is only available in black but we have a 1mm thick waxed cord or 1mm cotton thong available in brown www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-Cotton-Thong/c431
Q: Hi - can you tell me which thread would be the best for general beading use and for knotting between beads. I've never beaded before and would like to have a go at necklaces and bracelets etc. Thanks
A: The thread you want might depend on the type of beads you want to use. Are you looking for something to use with chunky, handmade beads, or tiny machine made glass? Normally the rule is the bigger the bead the larger the hole, so for chunky beads you can use a chunky thread but beware beads with very small holes! I'd say silk thread www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=silk is ideal to start with, it's thin, strong, easy to thread (the packs each come with their own needle attached), the knots look lovely and the silks come in a great range of colours. It's ideal to start knotting with.
Q: Hi, I would like to start creating things using 19 gauge wire - what does that relate to on your website?
A: Apparently 19 gauge is 0.9mm wide, we don't have any wire that size but we do have either 1mm or 0.8mm in various finishes like silver plate: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silver-plated-wire/bo4196 or copper: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Copper-wire/bo4195
Q: Hi, I'm making wire wrap rings and was wondering what wire you would recommend for it?
A: It would be best to use the metal based wires in a 0.8mm or above www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Metal-Based-Wire/c435 we have all sorts of finishes, it's easy to shape (depending on the thickness) with fingers or with pliers, you can even hammer it flat in places.
Q: I have been asked to re-string a pearl necklace measuring 44inches what would be the most suitable thread, I have tried 4 thickness of nymo but the knotting slips through and also this stretches considerably.
A: The traditional way of re-stringing pearls is to use Silk thread because is really easy to knot and won't damage your pearls but it will stretch slightly over time. We have three thicknesses 0.5mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-thin/bo4209 0.7mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-medium/bo4217and 0.9mm www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-thick/bo4218 depending on the hole size of your pearls. The silk is supplied in a 2 meter length and comes with a handy attached needle which makes it really easy to thread.
Q: I have found a childrens craft pattern using pony beads to make animal patterns, but it calls for satin cord. What can I use instead?
A: I'd suggest our 'rat tail' which has a satiny finish and is 2mm thick -www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Rat-tail/bo4216?sid=3558#item3558
Q: I want to make a beaded bouquet for my daughter's wedding. Can you recommend a suitable wire for the task.
A: I think you'd need to use a combination of different thicknesses of wire, perhaps a metal based wire like the silver plated wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silver-plated-wire/bo4196?sid=2947#item2947 would be best. A thickness like 1mm would be great for creating a sculptured base but you'd need a really thin wire like a 4mm for threading through beads and wrapping around a base.
Q: I want to make a russian leaf pattern into a full necklace using 4-6mm beads, and the thread may need to be knotted at some stage - I also want it to be strong, what thread do you recommend please?
A: I think the best thread for this would be Wildfire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Wildfire/bo4219?sid=5861#item5861 It's strong (stronger than a loom thread like Nymo D), thin and 'thermally bonded' so when you are using a needle and threading it back on itself you won't be able to pierce the thread and fray it.
Q: I want to start macrame and am looking for some thicker cords - what would you recommend? It is for larger projects such as plant holders, not the fine jewellery macrame. Thanks very much.
A: For a project like a plant holder you'd need a fairly thick cord, but our cotton thong might be a little stiff for knotting. I would have thought our waxed cord would do the trick, it's about 1mm thick and comes in a range of colours -www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Waxed-cotton/bo7602?sid=3719#item3719
Q: I want to string some pearls to make a traditional neckace - with knots between the pearls - what thread would be best suited? The pearls are approx 6-8mm.
A: The best thread for pearls would be our silk www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=skn which comes in a variety of colours and would make attractive knots between the beads.
Q: Looking for spools of Nymo white D beading thread
A: You can find all our loom threads at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Loom-Thread/c436
Q: We are looking for a wire which can be used with wire sculpting board to make shapes which keep their shape to make earrings and such like, there is such a choice that we're not sure! Thanks
A: I think you'll need one of our metal based sculpting wires like silver, gold, copper or brass plated wire (0.8mm probably). They can all be found here - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Metal-Based-Wire/c435 We also have a selection of coloured wires. The thicker the wire the better it will hold its shape, but it will also be trickier to bend.
Q: What kind of wire can I use for making coil string beads or coil component?
A: I would recommend our 0.8 plated wire as you want it to hold is shape but still be quite malleable if your making larger coils I would use 1mm. We have metal based wire in several finishes and can be found at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/wire-metal-based/c435.
Q: What type of wire or thread should I use for necklace with 6mm Swarovski crystal pearls and bicones?
A: Beading wire is always a good bet, it's very strong but still flexible and easy to use. You'll find our range at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Beading-Wire/c434
Q: What type of wire will be suitable for daisy necklace made in one of your videos?
A: The daisy chain necklace in our video is made on a thread rather than a wire, it's made using Nymo thread www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Nymo-D/bo4205?sid=2965#item2965
Q: Which thread is suitable for fringing and tassels?
A: The most suitable thread would be our silk thread in medium www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-medium/bo4217 or thick www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-thick/bo4218. This might prove expensive though if your planning the make several items you might find some better results at your local haberdashery.
