Tiny Handmade
Small lampwork glass beads handmade in India.
These tiny beads are individually hand made in small units around the holy city of Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges. They are made using kerosene lamps powered by a foot pump. We do our best to ensure high quality and consistency but we rather like the idea that each item is a bit different from the last.

Frequently asked questions about the collection: Tiny Handmade
Q: could you please tell me what size the hole is in the 10 by 8mm oval ; 7mm round and 5mm round beads.
A: These beads are handmade so the hole sizes will vary, as a guide the ovals have 1.5mm holes and both sizes of round beads have holes of approximately 1mm.
Q: Do you do a catalogue
A: Yes we do, you can find it at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/catalogue-hot-off-the-press/c496
Q: Hello, I can't work out how big the beads are! Have you got an image with something to give an idea of scale? Many thanks.
A: The size of the bead is written above each type, in millimetres. These round beads are all either 5mm or 7mm, and the oval beads measure 10x8mm. If you have a copy of our catalogue you can see the bead's size in the pictures. Almost all of the items in our catalogue have pictures that are actual size.
Q: hi is it possible to send a sample of beads as it's very difficult to see if they are what i require? And also are they mixed or can I order one colour
A: All of the beads in this collection can be bought individually in retail quantities, just pick a group and click on 'view full range' then you'll get through to a screen where you can see the different colours and choose how many of each you'd like. I'm afraid we don't send out free samples, since most of our items can be bought singly or in small quantities and our minimum order is just £5.
Q: Hi, I am looking for beads with a 3mm hole for my ankle chain like pandora glass beads, Lisa.
A: I'm afraid that the only glass beads that we sell that have such big holes are our range of pandora style beads which you can find (while stocks last) at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Pandora-Style/c508 All of our other glass beads have relatively small holes (not wider than 2mm).
Q: I am looking for navy blue beads but so far I am not successful
A: We have a nice royal blue in our transparent range www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Transparent-round-7mm/bo23#royal blue and in our wooden beads www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=varnished+round&x=0&y=0
Q: I love the story of your Indian beads! Are they certified fair trade?
A: No, I'm sorry we've found it hard to find a reliable certified Fair Trade supplier but we've had a long standing relationship with our Indian supplier. Our Indian beads are all village made and our buyers have personally visited each major centre of production in order to check the conditions at first hand. The first thing we look for is a good relationship between our supplier and his workers. No working knowledge of Hindi is required, a broad smile is the same in any language. Happy, smiling workers make happy, smiling beads.
Q: So, the bead size is diameter or circumference?
A: All the bead sizes are the diameter from hole to hole.
Q: What is the whitish powder in the centre of these beads? I assume it is harmless. Is it Kaolin?
A: This is the residue of a local clay into which the rods are dipped to stop the molten glass getting stuck to the rod.
