Frequently asked questions about the product: Waxed cord

Q: Could this be used to make a wish bracelet that would wear off? If not have you any product you would recommend? Thanks
A: Yes most wish bracelets are made using a waxed cotton cord and we stock this in lots of bright colours. Our hemp: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Hemp-twine-thin/bo4212 or silk cord:www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-thick/bo4218 would also be suitable.

Q: Does the colour run if the cord gets wet?
A: No, these cords are colourfast.

Q: Hi there, I am looking for some 1mm - 1.5 mm wax cotton thread. I am restoring a 1960's military parachute harness (to be used on a static display & not to jump out of a plane!!) It needs to be in either white or light grey (basically an off wh ite colour) . I will be useing an industrial sewing machine that copes with this diameter thread, can you help? Many thanks
A: We have a waxed cotton thong in white at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Cotton-thong/bo4158 , the item code is BTM02 and it's approximately 1.5mm thick.

Q: Hi, do you sell 0.5mm and/or 2 mm waxed cord?
A: The waxed cord only comes in a thickness of 1mm, but we have a variety of thicknesses and colours in leather and cotton thong. The thick leather thongs LTK are 2mm, the medium LTM are 1.5mm and the thin LTN are 1mm wide -www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-thong/bo4157 As these are natural products they can vary in thickness. The cotton thong comes in the following widths: thin (BTN) is 1mm, medium (BTM) is 1.5mm and thick (BTK) is 2mm - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Cotton-thong/bo4158

Q: Hi, please can you tell me what clasps I would use to make the cotton waxed thong into a necklace? It is a bead necklace for a little girl so would need to be robust. I'm new to jewellery making and haven't a clue what to use, thank you.
A: The easiest to use clasps are either the HKH1 which can be seen here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Heavy-hook-sprung/bo4034#item2794 and tend to be used with the LRS leather ends here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-small/bo4038#item2802 Also very popular and easy to use are the trigger clasps which come in 2 sizes and different finishes here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=trigger these are mainly used with the LF leather ends here www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-flat/bo4037#item2800 and a jump ring or split ring to connect the two. Or you could use a sliding knot with no clasps at all. You may be interested in one of our instruction guides which can be seen here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/instruction-booklets-leaflets/c414

Q: Hi. Do you do the waxed cotton cord in white ?
A: I'm afraid not, however we do have a 1.5mm thick cotton thong in white here - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Cotton-thong/bo4158 and two thicknesses of waxed thread in white here - www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/threads-wires-misc/c437

Q: Hi. Do you have Leather thong & cotton thong - Waxed cord size 1mm ONLY or less in other colours except black and natural? Because I can't use 1.5mm cord with your Calotte-they are too small. Can you tell me please how to use Leather crimp round? Better if you have video. Thank you.
A: We have lots of colours of leather thong that come in a 1mm thickness at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-thong/bo4157 and cotton at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Waxed-cord/bo4159 To use a round leather crimp you need to slide in your thread, knotting it if necessary to get a really tight fit. The crimp itself looks kind of like a spring, the important thing is to squeeze only the bottom rung of the crimp with a pair of flat nosed pliers. Sorry we don't have a video of this technique available at the moment.

Q: I have just read the q and a above, which is very helpful. But I am a little confused, what is the coating on the cotton thong made from and what is the polish on the waxed cord made from, it's just that I have allergies and have used waxed cord, not from you, from somewhere else and I reacted to it, thanks for your help Julia
A: We've had a little trouble getting accurate details from the suppliers on this, the cotton thong definitely has a coating and it contains beeswax. I believe the waxed cord is simply certified organic cotton which has somehow been polished to achieve the finish, rather than having a coating of any kind. I'm really sorry I can't be more specific, what I will say is that we sell vast amounts of both of these products and I'm not aware of any customers who've had a reaction to either.

Q: I'm new to this and just exploring. If the wax cord I am using is 1mm thickness, which beads should I buy. I brought a mixed bag but only a couple of these fit with the cord. You don't list the hole thickness of all your beads. Please help. I particularly like the pressed round glass beads.
A: We are slowly adding all of the hole sizes of our beads but as you can imagine this is a very big job. Our mixed bags of beads can really vary in hole size especially the hand made Indian glass. I have measured the holes of all the sizes of the Czech pressed round glass beads and they are 0.8mm wide. If you would like to check any of the hole sizes before you place an order please contact us by e-mail sales@beadsunlimited.co.uk or give us a call on 01273 740777.

Q: Is this cotton cord organic?
A: Yes, that's right, according to the manufacturer all the waxed Cotton cords (WXC) are made from Certified Organic Cotton only.

Q: Is this the thinnest cord you sell? I'm having problems threading small beads onto it. Thanks, Kim from Lincoln
A: No, the thinnest cord we have would be the waxed thread at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Waxed-thread-thin/bo4214 or we have thin silk at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Silk-thread-thin/bo4209

Q: Is this type of cord suitable for making Macrame bracelets? Will it hold the knots around the core strands or is it too slick? The cotton thong makes a very study, firm bracelet when knotted in the Macrame style. Will waxed cotton be as sturdy?
A: The waxed cord is suitable for macrame and will hold tight knots securely. If you want something that is a little bit stiffer and has a tighter weave the cotton thong might be better for you but both are suitable to use for macrame.

Q: Please could you tell me what is the wax used on your waxed cotton cord? Many thanks
A: The 'waxed cord' isn't waxed at all but sort of polished, just so it will slip through beads easily, not to a high shine. It's made from organic certified cotton and because there's no wax used it's suitable for vegans. The cotton thong that we have is waxed and the coating wears off quickly.

Q: What is the difference between cotton thong and waxed cord?
A: There is not much difference between the two! They come from different suppliers and are available in different colour ranges so we stock them both. The main difference is that cotton thong has more of a coating on it so feels more sturdy and the ends can be singed with a lighter to seal them.
