Frequently asked questions about the collection: bead cages
Q: I have stones that have no holes. The bails did not work because they are not perfect shape would the cage work better?
A: Yes, you should be able to tease the cage apart, slip the stone in and then squash the cage closed again. You can thread through the cage from end to end.
Q: If I wish to buy about 25mm beads without holes to use in my the bead cages which ones would I use please
A: A 25mm bead will fit into a 25mm cage, just about, but it doesn't really look right, it makes it too stretched, sort of like a bead muffin-top! The largest cages that we have are 25mm and a 20mm bead will fit into them well. I'm afraid we don't have any beads without holes, you might need to search the web for pebbles or balls as any beads will have holes through them.
Q: If you put a 1"/20 mm marble in the 25mm cage, will it be loose? I would like it to be tight in the cage. What size would I use? Thanks. Cindy Alabama, United States
A: I've just tried this with a 20mm bead and it's a snug fit, the bead certainly doesn't rattle around in the cage. Any tighter and you wouldn't be able to get the bead inside.
Q: Is the dimension given for these cages the height or the width (although, in this case, perhaps they are the same number)? Thanks, Adrian, Bristol
A: They should be round, so the height and width should be roughly the same.
Q: You say its easy to pop a bead into these cages - but how is it done without mis shaping the cage?
A: The best bet is to choose a cage slightly larger than the bead, eg. a 10mm cage for an 8mm bead. The bead can then simply be pushed between the wires of the cage without mis-shaping.
