Frequently asked questions about the collection: Leather & Cotton Thong
Q: could you advise on how to finish the leather thread off on a necklace?
A: You need to finish your leather off and add a loop, you can use leather crimps for this, we have flat leather crimps at:www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=leather+crimp+flat and round leather crimps at:www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-small/bo4038?sid=2802#item2802 You can see a round leather crimp used in this video: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/videos/basic-pendants-the-beginners-guide-to-beading/19 After you've finished off the thread with a crimp you can add the clasp of your choice.
Q: do you do suede thong?
A: Yes we do, you can find it at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Suede-2-5mm/bo4213 we also do a veggie option, fake suede which you can find at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Fake-suede-3mm/bo5289
Q: do you do the waxed cotton in 1.5mm size
A: Our waxed cord (WXC) is currently only available in 1mm thickness but our coton thong is available in 1mm (BTN), 1.5mm (BTM) and 2mm (BTK) thicknessess. You can see it here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Cotton-thong/bo4158 This is a very similar procuct, the main difference is that cotton thong has more of a coating so feels more sturdy and the ends can be singed with a lighter to seal them.
Q: Hi - I would like to make a leather choker for a pendant which has a bail 4mm in diameter. My idea is to braid three lengths of leather so that it's stiff enough to stay more or less in a circle shape when worn (the pendant isn't very heavy). Could you advise on the leather (or other stringing material) and how I should finish it off please? Many thanks.
A: I'd try the 1mm leather, you can just plait it and if you plait it tightly enough the results should be quite stiff. If you use the thin 1mm leather (LTN) then you will be able to squash the ends into a round leather crimp www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-small/bo4038 to finish off. Just insert the leather and then squash the last rung of the crimp to secure it. Then you have a loop on either end that you can attach to a clasp.
Q: Hi there, I would like to make a double wrap braided leather thong bracelet to go through 4mm tube beads. Is it better to use the 1mm round or flat thonging? many thanks for your help :)
A: If you want it to go through a 4mm tube you will need a thin cord so I would recommend trying our thinnest which is the 1mm. To practice the braiding you may also want to experiment first with a cotton cord www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Waxed-cotton/bo7602 as this will be a bit more flexible and forgiving. Another great cord for braiding is our flat faux suede which also comes in lots of bright colours www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Fake-suede-3mm/bo5289.
Q: Hi, I'm looking for leather thong about 1.5-2mm diameter, black, that will hold a reef knot. I want to thread a ring onto it, and then tie the reef knot behind my neck, so that it will hold it. Can you help?
A: Try our thick leather thong (2mm) www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-thong/bo4157#item2909 it's easy to use, strong and supple. If you tie your knots tightly they should stay secure for quite a while.
Q: How do I finish off cotton cord if I were to make a necklace?
A: The best way to finish off a cord is by adding a crimp to form a loop which you can use with a clasp, you can use leather crimps for this (whether you're using cotton or leather), we have flat leather crimps at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=leather+crimp+flat&searchbutton=Search and round leather crimps at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-small/bo4038?sid=2802#item2802 After you've finished off the ends with a crimp you can add the clasp of your choice.
Q: How do you fix fasteners to the ends? Is leather better than cotton?
A: We have two types of 'ends' for leather and cotton thong, the flat which you can see here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-flat/bo4037#item2800 and we have the round which you can see here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Leather-crimp-round-small/bo4038#item2802 The flat leather crimps are fixed in place using pliers to bend one side over onto the thread, then the next side on top of that. To use the round crimps you place the end of your cord, doubling it if necessary to insure a tight fit, into the spiral. Then with a pair of pliers grip the very last coil and squeeze gently but firmly until the spiral grips the cord. Once you have either of these ends in place you can attached your clasp using jump rings. Leather and cotton both work well.
Q: How do you tie a thong where you can slide each end along to correct size?
A: This is called a Slip knot or sliding knot and this is demonstrated in our leather bracelet video www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/videos/bracelet-on-leather-the-beginners-guide-to-beading/24
Q: i have swarvski 4mm beads and i need something that i can thread them on that will hold its shape. I have tried clear thread and this distorted the shape.
A: The only items we have which hold their shape are the range of memory wire at www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/charity.php
Q: I want to put just a few beads onto a leather thong bracelet. What can I use to stop them sliding up and down the leather?
A: The simplest and most effective way would be to knot the beads in place as using crimps would most likely damage the cord.
Q: I'm looking for a thread suitable for bookbinding & sewing two pieces of leather together securely. Do you stock anything that would work?
A: Having done an online search it looks like linen thread is used for most book binding. We stock one type of linen thread we you can have look at here: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Linen-thread/bo4208#item2891 You may want to consult someone who specialises in book binding about whether this particular linen thread is suitable.
Q: I've seen pandora beads strung on black cord or thong on a website and want to know what size thong would work.
A: All Pandora beads have 5mm wide holes, so you'd have to have a pretty thick cord, or be using a couple of strands. Our thickest cord is our BTK cotton www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Cotton-thong/bo4158?sid=2927#item2927 which is 2mm thick.
Q: Is there a tool I can use to help thread beads onto leather thongs? sometimes the leather just isn't sturdy enough to push through.
A: I Would recommend trying a dab of clear nail varnish or PVA glue to harden the end of your thread as this should make it easier to thread with.
Q: What animal does the leather thong come from?
A: Our leather is made from either buffalo or cow hide.
Q: When making bracelets with this material how can you affix a clasp or what is the clasp to use?
Q: Which cord would you recommend for micro macrame?
A: Perhaps one of our silk threads www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/home/search.php?searchfor=silk would be best. They range from 0.5mm to 0.9mm thick.
