Frequently asked questions about the collection: wire - metal based
Q: Do you sell wire that you can knit with? It needs to be fairly soft and approximately 0.3mm, thank you, Ann.
A: Yes, we have some tough but supple 0.3mm lacemaker's wire that should be perfect for knitting with. You can find our brass lacemaker's wire at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Brass-lacemakers-wire-0-3mm/bo915 and our bright steel lacemaker's wire at: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Bright-steel-lacemakers-wire-0-3mm/bo918
Q: Hi, my name is Nicola Mulryan and I am writing from Norway. I'm looking for a heavy memory wire that I can use together with heavy beads. I need to be able to buy it in a roll so I can cut it up to the length I need. The wire is to be used for bracelets. I did buy a wire from another internet shop but it is too thin and not heavy enough to use with the beads. I need to wrap the wire around so that I have about 3-4 rows when the bracelet is finished. What would you recommend?
A: I'd recommend our Beadalon memory wire www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Heavyweight-memory-wire-small/bo831, which is the thickest that we sell. It should hold whatever shape you bend it into and comes in a whole big coil, rather than cut up individually. You can use it with heavy glass and metal beads without making a difference to its shape.
Q: Hi, which wire is closest to 22 gauge? I wanted to try the briolette technique.
A: Well apparently 0.8mm is 20 gauge and 0.6mm is 24 gauge, so I think it would be 0.7mm (which we don't supply I'm afraid). The thinner the wire the easier it will be to work with.
Q: Making tiara for panto, what gauge wire should I use?
A: Well you could use one of our ready-made tiara bases: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Tiara-base/bo836 for the base and then wrap thinner wire around it for the decorative parts. Take a look at this project for some tips on tiara making: www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/projects/fireworks-tiara/63
Q: Sorry this may sound as though I am being a bit dim but is the higher the gauge number the finer the wire, i.e. is 28 guage thinner wire than 24 gauge? Thank you if you can help me. Jan
A: Yes that's right, the higher the gauge the finer the wire. All of our wires are shown with their actual measurement though to make life easier!
Q: Which wire is 29 gauge thickness? Which would be most suitable as I am doing a 'MINI ENTERPRISE' with school and I am making beaded animals? It needs to go through small beads and we will need quite a big batch. Any colour is fine.
A: I think the 0.3mm lacemaker's wire is the closest we have to 29 gauge (it's 28) www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/Brass-lacemakers-wire-0-3mm/bo915 It's flexible, thin and strong, you can twist it, shape it and it's great for use with tiny seed beads (rocailles).
